When first starting out in window cleaning, many first timers are not really thinking about what they are wearing inside a person’s home. After all you are there to clean their windows, not worry about what’s on their floor. Making this assumption is a terrible mistake and very unprofessional.
Although most people don’t care if you wear your shoes into the house, not everyone feels that way. Usually you can tell if someone cares if you see their shoes outside the door. This is a good clue that you should remove your shoes before you go in. Some people place signs at their door asking guests to remove their shoes before they enter, don’t assume you can ignore this since you are a one time visitor on a service call.
It’s professional to remove your shoes and it’s a good courtesy, telling your customers that you respect their home even if they wear shoes inside their own home. There is nothing wrong with taking off your shoes and wearing socks into the home, although you should make sure that you have clean socks on. This is much better than wearing your shoes with the possibility of tracking something in, that will put a damper on your service.
When it comes to wearing only socks into the home, there are two problems with this. First, you will need to bring extra socks with you to the job if you clean the outside of the windows first and then the inside. The reason why you need the extra socks in this scenario is because usually your socks will get wet, and you don’t want to be trumping around their house in wet socks. Standing on couches and walking across wood floors in wet socks is a serious problem. The second reason why only wearing socks is not the greatest idea, is because it’s not the most professional way to go, even though it’s better then shoes.
The most professional method is to wear booties to cover your shoes. The booties keep their floors clean and allow you to keep your shoes on. It won’t matter then if you have wet socks and they won’t wonder if you have foot fungus or something. It also just looks more professional. By wearing the booties you are telling your customers that you care about their home so much that you have already planed in advance for entering their home and that you intend to keep it clean, even if they don’t.
Believe me, I have been in homes were you are asking yourself why you are wearing the booties when everything is so dirty and the homeowner obviously does not care. Just make it a rule to wear your booties anyways. Remember you are offering a top notch service, cleanliness and professionalism.
There are two main types of booties you can purchase for window cleaning. There are the booties by the box load that are disposable, although I recommend using them a few times before disposing of them. Also be sure to take them off before going back outside. The other option is to purchase some long term booties that are washable. This will save you money long term and the environment too! As far as the disposable ones are concerned they come in some basic sizes so be sure to get the right ones, as they will need to stretch around your shoes.
Remember that the more you can do to make your window cleaning business professional, the more trust and confidence your customers will have in you; resulting in happy customers who will hopefully recommend you to all their friends and family simply because you wore some blue booties.
